What is Hung Kuen?

Hung Kuen (or Hung Gar) is one of the 5 original Southern Styles of Gung Fu, originating from the Shaolin Monastery in China. Literally translated Hung Kuen means Hung Family Fist or Style.

The five family systems were started strictly as fighting arts, used to battle the Ching Dynasty. Unlike Northern systems, which were older and had evolved during peaceful times , the masters of the Southern systems had to quickly teach their students how to fight. As a result hard power was taught first, followed by internal training. Stances were wider and lower, and footwork less active , relying more on strength for defence.

Hung Gar Kuen was founded by Hung Hei Gung. It employs external strengh and dynamic tension exercises and is excellent for developing muscle and strong, low stances.

Also, the five animals are studied and their movements developed into powerful techniques.

DRAGON - For flexability and graceful movements

TIGER - A clawing style built upon bone strengthening exercises

SNAKE - For 'chi' and striking of vital points

CRANE - To strenghen the sinews for balance and quick movement

LEOPARD - To develop power and speed
